Our Story

L.I.F.E. 5b began with a group of friends who shared a deep passion for growing their own food, homesteading, and a burning desire to help others. Meeting monthly, we discussed our mission to ensure that families in Southwest Iowa had access to healthy, nutritious food. Our shared values of compassion and community inspired us to support anyone in need, recognizing that traditional forms of assistance might not always reach every segment of the population.

As our vision took shape, we realized the potential for formalizing our efforts under a 501(c)(3) framework. We humorously dubbed ourselves "hippies and homos," but we soon understood the importance of a name that truly reflected our mission. After many brainstorming sessions, we proudly embraced Local, Iowa, Food, Empowerment 5b (L.I.F.E. 5b), with "5b" symbolizing our growing zone and deep-rooted connection to gardening.

L.I.F.E. 5b is committed to fostering food security, education, and collaboration within our community. We work tirelessly to support local farmers and producers, ensuring that our food boxes are filled with fresh, locally sourced produce. Our programs are designed to empower individuals and families, providing them with the tools and resources they need to thrive.

As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain dedicated to our core values and mission. We invite you to join us on this journey, helping us make a lasting impact, one food box at a time. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier community where everyone has access to the nourishment they deserve.
